Biotechnology BioManufacturing (Continuing Education)
Short Term
Students learn the basic skills required to become trained process technicians for biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical companies. Through classroom instruction and laboratory work, students are prepared to enter the workforce and learn company operations and tasks.
Durham County has over 20 major biomanufacturing and pharmaceutical company and 35 biosciences related industries.
Students from Durham Tech and Wake Tech can take advantage of shared resources and opportunities offered by a new collaboration called RTP Bio.
The BioManufacturing program includes the following courses (see course descriptions and class schedule listed below):
- Prerequisites
BioWork 3.0: Students must be 18 years of age or older and show proof of a high school diploma or high school equivalency OR provide a copy of a transcript of any completed Associate’s degree or higher.
GMP and SOP: no prerequisite
BioCertification Review: Prerequisite: BioWork certificate

- Textbooks
The BioWork textbook and/or lab kit is included in the course fee and must be picked up from Main Campus by the end of the first week of the course. Students that are registered and have successfully submitted payment for the course will receive an email from the program director at least 24 hours prior to the first day of the course with more detailed information.
- Registration
Students must submit proof of prerequisites prior to registration (see above).
- Complete the BioWork online educational session and complete the form at the end to inform the program director. Select Durham Tech as your preferred college.
- Complete a Continuing Education Registration form.
If paying online: email the registration form to biotechce@durhamtech.edu. They will contact you with online payment instructions. Deadline for Registration and payments is 48 hours prior to the class start date. After that time, they will no longer be accepted. You will need to submit a payment to be seated in the class. Once you receive the requested financial assistance (see the financial assistance section below), your payment will be refunded back to you.

Durham Public School Seniors
The BTC-3200J BioWork DPS course is available through the Career and College Promise (CCP) program (see the Science and Math pathway). This course is currently available to students that are high school seniors at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability. BULLS Scholarship
The BULLS Life Sciences Academy is an initiative and partnership between Durham Tech and Made in Durham that helps support young adults in pursuing a career in the life sciences industry by providing scholarships to help individuals successfully complete Durham Tech’s Biotechnology Biomanufacturing program.
- Earn academic and life stipends over a 17-week period (covers tuition, course fees, Process Technician Certification fees, and living expenses). This is not a loan; it is a scholarship that pays monthly stipends!
- Guarantees one-on-one academic and job search support for all BULLS participants
- Articulate credit towards Durham Tech’s Biotechnology AAS Degree (2-year associate in applied science degree program)
- Eligibility
The BULLS Life Sciences Academy is an equity-centered initiative that seeks to recruit underrepresented students. BULLS Life Sciences Academy participants must:
- Be 18-25 years old
- Have a high school diploma or high school equivalency (GED or HiSET)
- Must reside in Durham County
- Be able to pass a drug screen and criminal background check
- Requirements
Every individual interested in participating in the BULLS Life Sciences Academy must complete the following:
- Attend a mandatory BULLS Information Session (see BULLS Academy website for upcoming dates)
- Complete the mandatory BioWork e-Learning Session (Link shared at BULLS Info Session)
- Submit the BULLS Life Sciences Academy application by the due date
Once students are accepted into the BULLS Life Sciences Academy, participants should strive to complete the following goals:
- Commit to the program full-time
- Successfully complete Durham Tech’s Biotechnology Biomanufacturing (non-credit) program and earn the industry recognized BioWork certificate
- Participate in locally sponsored industry engagement and networking events as well as career and hiring fairs

Biogen Scholarship for BioWork Students
In 2024, Biogen and Durham Technical Community College have partnered to offer the BioWork course at Biogen's Community Lab (CoLab) in RTP, North Carolina. In celebration of this partnership, The Biogen Foundation has awarded $10,000 in support of the BioWork program offered through Durham Tech!
Students from all backgrounds who wish to complete the BioWork course at Biogen's CoLab in RTP, NC are encouraged to apply for this scholarship opportunity. Students selected to receive this award must demonstrate financial need and perseverance to complete the BioWork course to obtain a career as a process technician within the life sciences industry.
Award Amount per Student: $296.25 (total cost of BioWork tuition and course fees)
Scholarship Duration: Begins August 1, 2025 and concludes on August 1, 2026
- Eligibility for BioWork Continuing Education (CE) Students
- Enrolled in the BioWork continuing education course section offered at Biogen's CoLab.
- Able to establish financial need in your application.
- A resident in North Carolina (show proof of residence).
- A maximum of 100% of the tuition for the BioWork course will be awarded.
- Cannot have any outstanding balances on their Durham Tech student account.
- Enrolled in the BioWork continuing education course section offered at Biogen's CoLab.
- How Do I Apply?
Prospective students must first enroll in the BioWork course section offered at Biogen's CoLab. Completely fill out the Biogen Scholarship Application Form to provide the selection committee with background information about you, your financial need, and your commitment to successfully complete the BioWork course at Biogen's CoLab to satisfy your career goals. Submit your completed application form two (2) weeks prior to the first day of class.
- How Will I Be Evaluated?
Awards are competitive and are based on the specific criteria as outlined above. The applications will be evaluated by the Life Sciences Selection Committee comprised of Durham Tech faculty and staff. Applicants may apply for the grant each semester but will only be eligible to receive this award one time to pay for one BioWork course attempt. Only completed applications received prior to the BioWork course start date will be considered.
- Do I Have to Repay the Award Amount?
Award applicants must attend the class with the goal of successful completion. Awards do not have to be repaid unless the student meets the following conditions:
- A student will lose award funding if a student does not show up for the course, and is designated a “no-show”. The course tuition costs will be forfeit
- A student will be required to repay the award amount back in full if the student drops, withdraws, or does not demonstrate academic engagement by the course's census date. A hold will be placed on the student's account and the student will be required to repay any funds awarded to them that semester. In addition, the student will not be eligible to receive this grant award again.
Students are strongly encouraged to notify the Program Director, Telicia Hunter (huntert@durhamtech.edu) immediately if any issues arise that could impact their success in completing the BioWork course.

NC Biotech’s MOVE Program for Veterans
NC Biotech’s Military Outreach and Veterans Engagement (MOVE) program assists transitioning service members, their spouses, and veterans in finding careers in life sciences. In addition, the MOVE program can assist veterans and their spouses with taking the BioWork Certificate course at Durham Technical Community College, for free!
Interested individuals can fill out the MOVE Interest Form to start their journey toward a fulfilling career in life sciences.
